Choose Joy.

Today on Craft. You. I want to talk about kindness. It's easy, especially when navigating the internet, to forget the power of our words. It's easy to make flash judgments of others whom we barely know and to tap off a snarky comment and think nothing of it. It's easy because we can hide behind the safety of our computers and the sanctity of our self righteous indignation. It's also easy to think we know our internet 'friends' based on the small glimpses we get into their lives based on brief posts on Facebook or Twitter.

I am endlessly amazed at the brazen rudeness on the internet, the rampant nastiness that I believe is filtering into our day to day reality. Kindness matters. The repercussions of our little kindnesses or cruelties are, like the flapping of the butterfly wings, far bigger than we know.

Words have power to lift us up, or tear us down.

It is important to understand the power of our words and to choose them wisely. It is also important to consider, before we click 'enter', why we feel compelled to share these words and how they might impact others. It is important that we think deeply about the things we say and why we are saying them and where they are rooted.

What joy will come from our words? What gifts will they bring?

We can not change the world, but we can change the way we move through the world. We can change the way we speak, the way we love and the way we react to others. Grand gestures are impressive, but the little kindnesses matter most. Every moment presents us with a choice, whenever possible, and even when improbable, choose joy.

  1. When I decided to smile at strangers I had no idea how much it would enrich my life.
