Be original.

Anyone can be a copycat.

Anyone can see something, like it, covet it and recreate it.

There is a level of creativity there, but it's a bit like powdered lemonade versus the real, juicy, pulpy, fizzy, fabulicious deal!

It's okay to see things and like them and want to recreate them, and one has to start somewhere, but you can do better than that, can't you?

Be inspired.

Be transparent.

Be real.

But most of all...be original. You have within you the power to create worlds of wonder and no one in the universe can do it quite like you, sparkle pony!

  1. Here, here! I agree with you completely. I think if most folks would give themselves a chance they might be surprised at just how creative they can be... without having to depend on someone else has already done.

  2. Too often, copying can become a crutch. It's fine to hold on to things when learning to walk but so much more satisfying when you can run on your own!

  3. I have to admit that sometimes I copy things, but then that makes me think of it a different way. I get the inspiration to make somthing almost entirely different.
Having the internet has made me a little crazy with ideas coming to me more than I can possibly make.

  4. Yes, I'm speaking more to direct copies rather than interpretations or inspirations. When learning techniques, you have to make the same thing, it is how you perfect your technique! You have to start with the pattern, learn how to use it and then you can start making alterations. It really is satisfying when you reach a point that you can fly!

  5. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery - ie your books are inspirational!

  6. Thanks, all! I'm really speaking to the trend in the DIY world of copying things people see in retail stores or made by big name designers. I am all for being inspired, design can be a wonderful dialog, I just think that copying something isn't really original, it's copying. Be inspired to make it your own! That is interesting. I don't care if people make the same thing from my books or blog, as long as they aren't selling them or making them into classes, I write how to books!

I hope though, that people who read my books become inspired to discover their own uniquely creative voice.

  7. There are times that I just can't squeeze something out my head for some ideas. I usually check in some blogs/projects made by other crafters and lift up a project or make it an inspiration. However, I do create something original. I make sure that out from that idea, I am making a product/project that I can say 'mine'. And by that, I can call it original. But if a person copies every detail of something that's a wrong deed.
