The Tao of the Fool

It's hard not to care what other people think about us, especially in this Brave new World of instant likes and comments and shares.  So much of the internet is about seeking approval.  Followers, traffic, subscribers, influence scores, connections...all of these metrics and measurements can make your head spin if you're not careful.



One day it's, "They like me! They really, really like me!"

And the next, "Oh poo, no one commented or Google+ or reTweeted.  Sad face.  They don't like me.  They really, really don't like me."

And so it goes in an endless pursuit of virtual approval.  Our message can change until it's hard to even recognize ourselves anymore.  It's the ever watering down of what makes us complex, juicy, ripe, resplendently human.

Here's the thing though, the more we shrink ourselves to win approval, the more we lose ourselves in the process.  The truth is, if you're willing to look like an idiot, you can do anything.  Yes, some people may think you daft, but most people will love you for your bravery.  It's the seams, the scars, the quirks and the 'mistakes' that make us human. We're all weird, in our own uniquely strange way.

Don't be afraid to show the seams.  Every picture doesn't need to be perfection.  Every moment doesn't need to be careful orchestrated.  Every Tweet or post or Instagram doesn't need to launch a million pins or a dozen comments.  You don't have to take the safe road or make the expected choices.  In fact, I highly suggest you take the side roads and roll the dice every chance you get!

Be authentically you in all of your Technicolor, multi-faceted, imperfectly perfect glory.  People will like you, people won't like you.  So it goes.

In the Tao it is all the same.
